# Changing the project key
The project key can be updated as follows:
1. Retrieve your project. See [Retrieving projects](/sonarqube-server/2026.2/user-guide/viewing-projects/retrieving-projects.md) for more details.
2. Go to **Project Settings** > **Update Key**.
The new key must contain at least one non-digit character. Allowed characters are: `a` through `z`, `A` through `Z`, `-` (dash), `_` (underscore), `.` (dot), `:` (colon) and the digits `0` through `9`. This value is case-sensitive.
